He loves being a husband and a father, he has difficulty letting go of old t-shirts and sneakers, and he daydreams about sports and comic books more than he would like to admit. Gavin began teaching in Arts One in 2010. In 2019 he was awarded a UBC Killam Teaching Prize.
He is also interested in graphic novels, comic book literature, and literary responses to 9/11 his work in these fields has appeared in American Periodicals, European Comic Art, and The Encyclopedia of Comic Books and Graphic Novels. He is currently editing the Internet Shakespeare Edition of Macbeth (with Anthony Dawson). His first book, Shakespeare and the Imprints of Performance (Palgrave MacMillan, 2014), received very positive reviews and was reprinted in paperback in 2016.
Leeds Barroll Dissertation Prize from the Shakespeare Association of America–this international prize is awarded in recognition of the year’s outstanding work in Shakespeare studies. His doctoral thesis analyzing the history of Shakespearean editors’ engagements with performance won the Paul G. His work on the intersections of editorial practice, textual theory, and performance history has appeared in The Review of English Studies, Shakespeare: The Journal of the British Shakespeare Association, The Bulletin for the Society of Renaissance Studies, Comitatus, The Upstart Crow, and Literature Compass (where he is the three-time winner of Blackwell Publishing’s Essay Prize). Gavin Paul’s research interests centre on Shakespeare and early modern drama. Jason is also collaborating (with Gaby Pailer, CENES) on a new translation of Christa Winsloe’s “Gestern und Heute” (1930), and (with Matt Tomkinson, Theatre & Film) on the first English-language translation of Hans Henny Jahnn’s “Pastor Ephraim Magnus” (1919).įor the 2021-2022 academic year, Jason is the Acting Director of First-Year & Interdisciplinary Programs in the Faculty of Arts. Jason has coordinated the Department’s first- and second-year German language levels has twice facilitated Departmental study abroad programs in Berlin spent two years as faculty in UBC’s Arts One Program and since 2019 has been collaborating with UBC’s Emerging Media Lab on the development of a virtual reality language learning application. His interests include curriculum design emerging technologies in foreign language learning translation teaching with and about comics masculinities and the culture of the Weimar Republic. Jason Lieblang holds a PhD in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of Toronto and teaches across the German Studies undergraduate curriculum here in CENES.
